World Stroke Day: BE-FAST Warning Signs and What to Do in Hyderabad

On World Stroke Day, 29 October, the useful message is simple: sudden trouble with balance, vision, face, arm, or speech is a stroke until emergency care says otherwise. BE-FAST is the checklist. Time is part of the treatment. Note when the person was last well and go to an emergency department in Hyderabad immediately.

Dr. Dheemanth Reddy, Consultant Neurologist at NeuMed Clinics, Nallagandla, meets families who waited because the weakness "seemed small" or because it faded. Some of those episodes are mini-strokes. The safest public rule is to treat every sudden BE-FAST sign as an emergency.

What does BE-FAST mean?

  • B — Balance: sudden dizziness, loss of balance, or trouble walking
  • E — Eyes: sudden blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision
  • F — Face: one side of the face droops, or the smile is uneven
  • A — Arm: one arm or leg feels weak or numb
  • S — Speech: slurred words, wrong words, or trouble understanding
  • T — Time: note the clock time and get emergency care now

You do not need every letter to be present. One sudden sign is enough.

What should bystanders do?

  • Ask the person to smile, lift both arms, and repeat a short sentence, without delaying the trip.
  • Record the time symptoms started, or the time the person was last seen well.
  • Do not give water, food, aspirin, or any home medicine unless emergency clinicians instruct you.
  • Do not let the person drive.
  • Tell the emergency team about blood thinners, a recent surgery, or a very high blood pressure history if you know it.

Hospitals decide whether urgent clot treatment or another pathway is appropriate. That decision depends on the type of stroke, the timing, and medical history. It cannot be made from home.

What if the symptoms disappear?

A transient ischaemic attack, or mini-stroke, causes stroke-like symptoms that resolve. The relief is real, and so is the risk of a larger stroke in the following days. Still go the same day. Bring a witness who can describe the episode, because the examination may look normal later.

Who in Hyderabad should take prevention seriously?

Stroke is not limited to older adults. High blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, irregular heart rhythm, and a previous mini-stroke raise risk at younger ages too. Festival food, missed pressure tablets, and untreated sleep problems are everyday contributors Dr. Dheemanth Reddy hears about from patients in Nallagandla and western Hyderabad.

  • Know your blood pressure, not only when you feel unwell.
  • Treat diabetes and cholesterol as stroke prevention, not only as number management.
  • Do not ignore an irregular heartbeat or palpitations.
  • Stop smoking. Ask for help if willpower alone has failed.

What happens at a neurology follow-up?

After the emergency phase, a neurologist looks for the cause: blood vessel risk, heart rhythm, sugar, cholesterol, and sometimes imaging already done at the hospital. The aim is to prevent the next event. Medicines are individual. Exercise, salt, and sleep advice are part of the same plan, not a replacement for it.

People who were discharged from a Hyderabad hospital can bring reports to NeuMed Clinics, HUDA Layout, Nallagandla for that review. New BE-FAST symptoms should return to emergency care first, not wait for a clinic appointment.

What are the BE-FAST warning signs of stroke?

Balance loss, vision change, facial droop, arm weakness, and speech difficulty, with time recorded and emergency care started immediately. One sudden sign is a reason to go.

Conclusion

World Stroke Day is a reminder to act, not only to read. Learn BE-FAST, protect blood pressure and sugar, and use neurology follow-up at NeuMed Clinics, Nallagandla, Hyderabad to lower the chance of another event.
